As a freelance graphic designer, I have run into many situations where a client sees something in one of my logo designs that I don’t necessarily see. A design may remind them of their neighbor’s annoyingly loud car or maybe a logo concept abstractly resembles a dog peeing on a tree. Each logo design can instill these types of feelings into anyone based on their own personal experiences – it can be like an inkblot test at times.
But I don’t think there’s anyway of missing this unintentional lookalike. JC Penny recently put up a billboard featuring an innocent picture of a teakettle… a Hitler teakettle. You may have to blur your vision a bit if you don’t see it right away, but it’s definitely there.
It makes me wonder if JC Penny didn’t see it themselves, but run with it anyway knowing they’d get some publicity from it. After all, the teakettle is sold out online!
