The University of Michigan Law School Senate was looking for a new logo to place on t-shirts, sweatshirts, decals, coffee mugs, and other apparel and merchandise. The goal was to create a strong design that would boost sales of Michigan Law School apparel and give the law school a unique image.

The shirt design combines the university’s famous block “M” with the word “LAW” representing the law school’s strong association with the University of Michigan’s enriched campus life. The bold, block lettering also gives a sense of permanence and strength.

I used the organic swirl shapes from their logo to act as foliage growing on a large tree branch that is emerging from the company’s icon. The unique design brings the logo to life and gives it character. It also reinforces the concept of all of their custom work coming from wood.

During this project, I worked with one of the most difficult clients I have ever encountered… me.

My bachelor party was quickly approaching and, since I was well-known for designing bachelor party t-shirts, all of my friends kept on asking, “So, what are the shirts going to look like?”. I had no intention of designing a shirt for my own bachelor party, but peer pressure finally kicked in and I went for it.

Since we were heading to Vegas, I decided to go with a “Casey in Vegas” theme. To visually represent this I created small round dots, representing old style Las Vegas sign lights, that spelled out “Vegas” in white. Within the “Vegas”, I also inserted “Casey”, which was less visible due to the usage of blue ink on the blue shirt.

The result was a shirt design that appeared to just say “Vegas” from far away, but as you got closer, you could read my name in the Vegas lights.

I was commissioned by a University of Wisconsin fraternity to design an event t-shirt for their first annual “Tour de Franzia”. I never understood the exact rules of the event, but it involved biking to various locations where a box of Franzia was consumed.

The shirt design borrows the font stylings of the Tour de France and Franzia logos, combining them into an appropriate, yet inappropriate, composition.

I decided that it would be pretty effective if I outfitted a volleyball in a pair of the sport’s popular “shorts”… and it would be pretty funny if the volleyball had some buns for those shorts to hug.

Luckily, the client thought it was funny and fit the personality of their team perfectly.

The inaugural “Blue Out”, a student-led effort to blanket Michigan Stadium in uniform support for the football team, was staged as the Wolverines hosted intrastate rival Michigan State in 2002. All Wolverine fans were encouraged to wear blue to the game to help provide a united backdrop in the stadium. The Michigan Student Assembly, The University of Michigan Athletic Department, and The Alumni Association asked me to design the commemorative long-sleeved T-shirts for the event.

The design shows a bulging “BLUE OUT” on the front with the famous University of Michigan winged football helmet design as the letter “O”. Over 4,000 shirts were sold in less than two weeks.
